This is another in a long list of reasons to move to Open Unix 8, 
which allows:

    CONSOLE=/dev/console,/dev/vt00-/dev/vt14

so that root can come in where root needs to.  But OSR5 people are 
determined not to migrate, forcing SCO and Caldera to support, what, 
five OS's these days?  My oh my.
