lost lilo

The "lilo -r /mnt" told lilo to do a "chroot /mnt" first. You might want to add a -v and my memory is that it is /mnt/sysimage, not just /mnt (but it has been a while since I have used a RedHat rescue CD!).

Similar procedures to recover grub though in both cases my first thought would be to look at the .conf files in case they are the source of the problem - I wouldn't just overwrite without looking first!

I recently had to fix grub on a Compage Proliant server. This page - How to install grub on a HP Proliant Server - gave me the clues I needed to alias hd(0) to /dev/ida/c0d0 before running "setup".

don't use any rescue or boot disk and don't reinstall linux !!!

1. boot on your redhat install Cd.
2. choose upgrade
3. the install program will check for available packages to upgrade.
4. after that, press alt-f2, you will have a terminal
5. on that terminal, you can see your linux partition in /mnt
6. type lilo -r /mnt
reboot and lilo will be back !

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
