Why was this a problem?

Early system boot loaders didn't necessarily know how to boot more than the OS they came with.

Worse, they often would overwrite existing loaders, so the order of installation was sometimes critical.

        It is absolutely possible, as I and others have (frequently) reported.
Briefly, install Linux (or UnixWare) first, leaving enough space on the boot
disk to house the root and swap within the first 1024 (virtual) cylinders.
Then install the second. Then install a decent boot manager. I've used OS-BS
for several years (from www.freebird.org).  You should choose to "set startup
id", which is not set by default.

        If your Linux asks permission to "reset the active partition", I
suggest you don't grant that permission. Some implementations have a tendency
to leave multiple "Active" flags, which then have to be cleared using FDISK.
Let your boot manager reset the Active flag.
