Samba semaphores

A semaphore is a kernel mechanism to control shared access to resources. Semaphores can be binary (meaning that if a process holds a semaphore on a resource, nothing else can use it until that process relinqueshes the semaphore) or more complicated.

Conceptually, it's like creating a lock file but of course much more efficient as it is done in the kernel.

See Understanding semaphores.

I've read before that the semaphore problem is a bug on Samba 2.0.5a and
there isn't a cure for it yet except for this workaround (that I've also
picked up from this newsgroup but forgot who posted it):

1. Kill smbd and nmbd processes

2. Run "ipcs -as" to list all active semaphores.

3. Remove the semaphore entry for Samba. The row with Key=0x00280269 is
Samba's. To remove it, run "ipcrm -s $ID" where $ID is the ID of the
Samba Semphore.

4. Start Samba again (eg. /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D and nmbd -D)

5. Make sure that the first connection with Samba is clean by doing

smbclient -L host_name -U username

When you do smbclient again, the report should be clean (no errors).

PS. I don't know what a semaphore is either. Sorry.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
