SCO PPP could do CHAP, MSCHAP or PAP.

PAP is not encrypted, but that might not matter on a local network where you are giving the local machines access anyway.

Why don't you set the SCO box up to use PAP, and do the authentication that
way (rather than wait for login/pass prompts).  There are a few articles on
www.aplawrence.com which might help you, but basically you need to set the
SCO up in netconfig to use PAP with the correct user/pass, and do:

- create /etc/gettyacts with (ownership bin,group bin,modes 440):
PPP:/usr/lib/ppp/ppp:-u nppp:0x7e

- change your modem getty line in /etc/inittab (also
/etc/conf/init.d/sio) and add "-s60" (that's 60 tenths of a second or
6 seconds - the man pages incorrectly say it is seconds):
Se2A:234:respawn:/etc/getty -680 -t60 tty2A p

or some such..
