Here is the whole of my notes (README.SCO) from the last time I compiled it:

ProFTPD Version 1.2.0pre9 compiled for SCO Open Server 5.0.5


Compiled with gcc and gnu make with the following command:
./configure
make 'CFLAGS += -DSIGIO=SIGPOLL -DMAXPATHLEN=PATHSIZE'

INSTALL:  

1 "make install"

2  edit /usr/local/etc/proftpd.conf
   see: sample-configurations/sco5.conf

3  possibly "useradd -m -d <$ServerRoot> -g nogroup ftp"
   depending on what you put in proftpd.conf

4  edit /etc/inet.d
   in the ftp line near the top, change /etc/ftpd to /usr/local/sbin/proftpd
   and ftpd to proftpd

5  "/etc/inetd stop"
6  "/etc/inetd start"

7  try to ftp to your machine.
