(By quickly I mean | using the least amount of resoruces.) #!/bin/sh # rmemptydir: given one argument, a starting directory, # this will delete its empty subdirectories find $1 -type d | while read D do l $D | grep -q 'total 0' && rmdir $D done However, this if you have ./a/b/c, where c is a directory, and b has nothing but c in it, this will still leave you with /a/b until you run the script again. It's thus useful to read the output of find in the reverse direction. Thanks, Fabio, because now I've found my first practical use for 'tac': #!/bin/sh # rmemptydir: given one argument, a starting directory, # this will delete its empty subdirectories find $1 -type d | tac | while read D do l $D | grep -q 'total 0' && rmdir $D done 'Tac' is not hard to find: TAC(1) GNU textutils 2.0 (August 1999) (printed 8/6/00) NAME tac - concatenate and print files in reverse If you can't compile tac, then awk can be made to print its input lines in reverse order. -- JP

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.
Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
