Hi Andre,

If you are using openssh-2.9.9p2 or similar,
you can go into your sshd config file,

   /usr/local/etc/sshd_config

and add a line called

  AllowUsers jeff pete bill toad@hops

to allow only jeff and pete and bill to log in.
Also, toad could only log in from the computer hops.
Or you could restrict access by groups rather than
users using the line:

  AllowGroups sales admin

Then only members of the sales and admin groups
could log in.

No uids or gids, only names allowed. As Tony
mentioned, you can find these and other useful
options in sshd(8).

Good Luck,
Matt

I also suggest reading Security Paranoia - restricting ssh access and SSH passphrases and keys.

Hackers will constantly try to log in to any open ssh they find. They use dictionary attacks mostly (trying random names and common passwords - "joe" with "joe1", "joe2", "password" and so on. Give them enough time and they might just get in. That's why you need to do more than just the basics.

Many of the products and books I review are things I purchased for my own use. Some were given to me specifically for the purpose of reviewing them. I resell or can earn commissions from the sale of some of these items. Links within these pages may be affiliate links that pay me for referring you to them. That's mostly insignificant amounts of money; whenever it is not I have made my relationship plain. I also may own stock in companies mentioned here. If you have any question, please do feel free to contact me.

Specific links that take you to pages that allow you to purchase the item I reviewed are very likely to pay me a commission. Many of the books I review were given to me by the publishers specifically for the purpose of writing a review. These gifts and referral fees do not affect my opinions; I often give bad reviews anyway.
