JP, as both you and then the stderr you quote illustrate,
you must point it (jwhois) at the _correct_ whois server.

All old .CA domains not re-registered with CIRA (the new CA domain
authority) were deactivated Dec 1, 2000; the old CDNNET server only
reports on those *deactivated* domains.  Active .CA domains can only
be queried at whois.cira.ca.  Try asking there.

[IIRC, that legacy (CDNNET) whois server is slated to be turned off
 sometime Feb 1st, 2001, about two days from now.]
